Welcome versatility
The Makino U86 is an extremely versatile wire EDM machine, which makes it ideal for parts production. This versatility means it can also used to cut fir tree-shaped grooves in aerospace engine parts, for example. Moreover, the U86 enables production of very precise parts such as die and guide plates for the stamping industry or sliders with a very good straightness for large plastic injection moulds. The U86s unique GS Cut function delivers excellent straightness in applications of up to 500 mm cutting lengths with a corresponding reduction in wire consumption and cutting time. This massively built machine enables the use of the well-known Makino H.E.A.T. technology for high-speed machining without compromising on accuracy. Besides delivering such outstanding qualities, the U86 is also robust, reliable and economical.
Robust and reliable performance
The fix-type table ensures consistently excellent cutting results in any position while the strong and rigid structure prevents thermal distortion and weight changes caused by the workpiece load and dielectric fluid fill level. This results in a higher degree of accuracy than a moving table delivers and the ability to take a heavier table load. The exceptionally large ball screws are supported on both sides to prevent excessive run-out and ensure fewer vibrations than a single-anchored ball screw system. These unusually large ball screws and liner guides are also able to withstand a heavier inertia load, which minimises backlash. The result is consistent performance irrespective of the part weight and its position on the table. Another beneficial feature is the Pro Tech function, which prevents rust developing on large parts that, due to their size, have to remain in the dielectric fluid for a long time.
Reduced non-cutting times
The U86 has a number of useful features that reduce non-cutting times. Makinos unique HEAT technology guarantees the fastest feeds without the risk of the wire breaking, even in extreme conditions such as nozzle-away machining. Here again, shorter non-cutting times are a clear benefit, along with stable cutting and no worries about wire breaks. Last but not least, the machines dual pump system creates better cutting conditions, which results in shorter machining times.
Economical operation
Several features facilitate maintenance of the U86. The compact head is made from a single ceramic block, which enables wear parts to be cleaned and exchanged without long adjustments. The split wire guide system is of big benefit when it comes to wire threading from the full 520 mm Z-stroke. When threaded from such big heights, the wire just has to pass through the large gap between the opened guides of the lower head and not through the small hole of a single guide system. The result is reliable wire threading from all heights. Since the machines wire extraction and drying system also eases maintenance, the bottom line is more time for cutting. Another key advantage is that the touchscreen panel and operating door can be set to the most convenient operating height. Besides, the new large-sized U-shaped door enables workpieces to be easily loaded, unloaded and set up in any position. Even work pieces weighing 3 tons can be easily accessed and adjusted when on the machine table. All these advantages can help boost productivity in everyday wire EDM operations.
Intuitive to use
Makinos new-generation Hyper i CNC controller is easier and faster to use so that even less experienced personnel can profit from the know-how and expertise of Makino’s application engineers and achieve outstanding results instantly. Through the deployment of smartphone-/tablet-style features such as pan, pinch, spread and swipe, the new Hyper i Control operating panel is intuitive to use. This ensures a very steep learning curve for the operator and allows wire cutting to be implemented as new technology in parts production without the risks that normally come with a new technology.
Highest accuracies on large parts
The large U86 underlies the strict rules of machine design and production that made Makino products well known in the market. As an example for this, the U86s cutting accuracy is achieved by a proper geometric built-up – not by electronic compensation of squareness or straightness of the axes. As a result, a pitch accuracy of ±5 µm on the full stroke of 800 x 600 mm can be achieved.
